ColonY

The ColonY project is a long process installation that evolves with time and space. This project investigates three different dimensions : the quantic physic (stirngs theory), evolution of population, and economic speculation on art.

ColonY is a growing community of units, consisting of entirely blank or black « magic » cubes.

The blank « magic » cubes are refered to here as the particles, evolving and making up the ColonY. The black « magic » cubes are refered to as the anti-particles, evolving and making up the anti-ColonY. These two colonies are displayed together in a symmetric way, where each makes up one half of the mother colony and as such they evolve simultaneously. Therefore, for each existing particle there needs to be an anti-particle. One such pair - consisting of one particle and its complementary anit-particle – here will be called a binome.

To start the project, the first pair of cubes (the first « binome »), will be sold via an auction happening. This will enable to generate a set of two new binomes for the Mother-ColonY. When these two binomes are sold, two new binomes will replace each of the previous ones and make up the next generation. And for each of the next binomes sold, another pair of binomes will be put in place, and so on, and so on. When the 10th generation of binomes enters the ColonY it will consist of 1024 binomes alltogether.

There are three ways that anyone can interact with the ColonY:

1. Peolpe can buy shares to pour money into the ColonY project and speculate on the ColonY’s growth of value in time.
2. A binome of cubes can be purchased
3. Any cubes that were bought can be destroyed by their owner.
By buying or destroying a cube, the buyer gets the opportunity to influence the evolution of the ColonY (following given rules).

As a further option within the process, people who bought ColonY shares will be allowed to sell them or buy more via an online exchange programme.

In the future there will be a possibility for other art spaces to create so-called daughter-colonies, which will evolve in close connection to the original Mother-ColonY and contribute to it.
